Caroline Leonard, Senior Marketing Manager at Spearline, Lorraine McCarthy, Chief People and Culture Officer at Spearline, Skibbereen rowers Aoife Hendy and Tomás Burchill, Nuala Lupton, Skibbereen Rowing Club President and Sean Murran, Skibbereen Rowing Club Chairperson, at the announcement of the new sponsorship deal.
Skibbereen Rowing Club was established on the banks of the River Ilen 51 years ago, with a single dream – to bring Olympic Class Rowing to Skibbereen. In 2019, on the banks of the same river, Spearline established its headquarters for its global telecommunications business. Both parties are now delighted to announce a new 3.5 year sponsorship deal and look forward to working together to achieve their growing ambitions.
Lorraine McCarthy, Chief People and Culture Officer at Spearline explained the synergy between the two parties, “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Skibbereen Rowing Club. As a growing, global company, we understand the importance that the club places on continuous learning, development, dedication and passion for what they do; these are all core values that we at Spearline also strive to embody.”
The rowing club has always worked hard to support young rowers by striving to provide the best resources and coaching available. The exemplary club will have a significant number of athletes at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Paul O’Donovan, Fintan McCarthy, Emily Hegarty and Aoife Casey are all set to race with Gary O’Donovan and Lydia Heaphy travelling as reserves. Skibbereen’s renowned rowing coach Dominic Casey will also be team Ireland’s Lightweight coach.
The successful West Cork rowing club currently tops the 32 county Rowing Union table with a grand total of 181 National Championships. They now hope to replicate the success that was achieved at the 2016 Rio Olympics by Gary and Paul O’ Donovan who achieved silver medals.
Chairperson of Skibbereen Rowing Club, Sean Murran stated that “The club are immensely proud of our rowers and coach Dominic Casey, the ongoing success of our athletes would not be possible without the generous support of the people and businesses of Skibbereen and the West Cork area and our main sponsor Spearline. We are particularly delighted to be associated with Spearline and thank them for their generous sponsorship and look forward to working in partnership with them into the future.”
Caroline Leonard, Senior Marketing Manager at Spearline added, “We would like to take this opportunity to wish the club and all the athletes the very best of luck in all their endeavors and in particular in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. From humble beginnings in Skibbereen, we have both risen to achieve international success in our respective fields and we look forward to furthering our achievements together.”
Club President and Skibbereen’s first international rower, Nuala Lupton concluded, “I am delighted that the thriving Skibbereen based business Spearline has rowed in to partner with our successful club – both based in the rural town of Skibbereen and on the beautiful Ilen river.”
