Spearline continues to monitor the impact that natural disasters and other external factors have on the performance of the world’s global telecommunications infrastructure.
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, “the number of global internet outages increased 16% in the week of April 10, ending a downward trend that began in end-February”. The article continues to describe that outages globally “increased to 260 from 224 in the previous week”. Outages within the US increased by 12% to 109. During the week of April 10, these US based outages accounted for 42% of all outages worldwide, while the previous week the US experienced 43% of all outages globally.
Brazil’s connection performance has been volatile, with an average failure rate of 2.72% recorded during the last 6 weeks. Overall, good audio quality scores were observed, with a low of 3.49 and a high of 3.73.

Germany experienced intermittent connection rate performance, with an average failure rate of 0.62% recorded in the last 6 weeks. Between March 22nd and March 26th, an average connection score of 98.27% was noted. A dip of 2.75% was observed on April 20th. Audio quality continued to perform strongly, with an average PESQ score of 4.14 in the last 6 weeks.

With a deadly second wave of coronavirus affecting India since March, the past 6 weeks have seen an average connection failure rate of 0.56%. A 2.11% failure rate was reported on May 1st. Despite the current challenges in India, audio quality continues to perform well.

Severe flooding in Kenya during April has led to significant population displacement and disruptions to livelihoods.
April saw the highest connection rate experienced so far this year in Kenya, however this was at a poor 99.02% level. Data from May shows a dip once again, indicating performance volatility. On April 26th, Kenya was impacted by a dramatic failure rate of 14.29%. There has been notable variation in audio quality – ranging from good to excellent. In the past 6 weeks, a low of 3.45 was recorded and a high of 4.24. Audio quality data has averaged in the “good” range for the last number of months.

Spearline’s support team has actively been working with our customers throughout Mexico to resolve congestion issues within the country. These problems are peaking during the busy morning periods.
The country has had a weak connectivity performance, with an average failure rate of 1.16%. Dips of 2.84% and 2.73% were recorded on April 5th and 6th respectively. Strong audio quality, with an average PESQ score of 3.74 were observed.

In early March, Vietnam’s internet infrastructure was affected by technical issues to two of its undersea cables; the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), which links Vietnam with Hong Kong and Japan, and the Intra Asia (IA) cable which connects Vietnam with Hong Kong. Both cables have now been repaired. However, late repairs to them were attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic as international partners were unable to apply for permits which would have allowed them to bring ships into designated sea areas to carry out works.
The country has seen a volatile performance with huge swings in connection rates observed over the past 6 weeks. A 22.35% failure was recorded on March 26th. On the other hand, audio quality is performing well overall.
