CEO Update: Covid-19 and telecoms – one year later

One year on from our first report on the impact that the pandemic was having on global telecommunications and with confirmed Covid-19 cases now exceeding 112 million worldwide, we at Spearline continue to monitor its effect on global telecoms infrastructure.

Over the past week, almost 330,000 cases of the virus have been recorded in BRAZIL. The country ranks third for case numbers after the United States and India, and second after the US in terms of virus related deaths. Connection performance has been impacted, with a high average failure rate of 2.28% noted in the past two months. Audio quality continues to perform well with an average score of 3.77 recorded.

The PHILIPPINES has faced poor connection performance with an average connection failure rate of 1% recorded in the past two months. In contrast, audio quality continues to perform at high levels. The country is due to receive its first delivery of vaccines at the weekend and the plan is to begin the inoculation rollout next week.

An average connectivity failure rate of 0.90% was observed in RUSSIA in the past two months. Audio quality continues to perform at strong levels. Russia has one of the highest infection rates globally; however, they also have one of the highest levels of vaccine hesitancy, with one recently published poll stating that just 38% of Russians are willing to receive the vaccination.

The number of cases in TURKEY recently surpassed 2.66 million. Turkey is working hard to get the case numbers under control, within 40 days more than 7 million of its citizens had been vaccinated. The country has faced poor connection performance with an average failure rate of 0.82% over the past two months. Following a notable dip in early January, high audio quality scores continued to be observed.

The table also includes countries whose telecoms infrastructure has been performing extremely well in spite of continued lockdowns and dramatic changes to traditional telecommunications demand patterns.
