CEO update: Global telecommunications infrastructure

With confirmed Covid-19 cases now exceeding 56 million across the globe, Europe and North America seeing a second wave of cases, some areas are now returning to restricted movements. Here at Spearline, we continue to monitor the pandemic's impact on global telecoms infrastructure.

ARGENTINA has seen weak connection performance, with an average failure rate of 1.39%. A drop of 16.82% was observed on the 16th of October, 15.81% on October 17th and 12.45% on October 18th. Audio quality is performing well with some mild variation. A doctor on Argentina’s advisory committee has warned that it is “probable” that the country will see a second wave in the coming year and that further restrictions were to be expected.

BRAZIL currently has the third worst outbreak of coronavirus globally based on the case numbers, placing it after the United States and India. Poor telecoms performance has been experienced with an average connection failure rate of 1.56% observed in the past 10 weeks. Good audio scores were recorded throughout this period.

There was a poor level of connection in ISRAEL with intermittent rates being recorded. Average failure rates of 1.55% were observed in the past 10 weeks. The Israeli military recently announced that they were ceasing the practice of monitoring social media postings in order to prevent large outdoor gatherings.

The PHILIPPINES, which has been devastated by typhoons and flooding in recent weeks, also faced weak performance with an average connection failure rate of 1.4% recorded in the past 10 weeks. Overall, there was a strong audio quality performance with minor dips noted on November 9th, 10th and 11th.

The government in TURKEY has suggested that tighter restrictions will need to be introduced as case numbers continue to surge. Turkey had intermittent connection performance with an average failure rate of 1.17% observed. Audio quality performed well with some mild fluctuations observed.

CANADA had excellent connection performance with an average failure rate of 0.07% noted. Strong audio quality performance was noted with scores of 4.0 and over recorded in the past 10 weeks. Restrictions on movement between Canada and the United States have continued in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

On Wednesday the USA surpassed 250,000 deaths from Coronavirus and New York city made the decision to close all schools. Notably, despite the immense rise of cases, there has been no degradation in connection or audio quality performance. Excellent performance with an average connection failure rate of just 0.07% was recorded in the past 10 weeks. Very high audio quality scores were also achieved during this period.

Countries showing signs of connection failures and audio quality degradation are included in the table below. The table also includes countries where the telecoms infrastructure has been performing extremely well in spite of having very high numbers of Covid-19 cases.
